Berry Cereal Banana Smoothie Bowl

Frozen fruit creates a thick base that can hold a generous cereal topping. A little cereal blended in gives the bowl a soft grain texture, while the rest stays crunchy on the surface.

Ingredients

Amounts above are for cooking. Products are sold in retail packages; pantry extras may be needed.

Method

  1. Load the blender

Add milk and yogurt first, followed by the frozen banana slices and strawberries. Let very hard fruit sit in the jug for 1 minute.

  2. Blend the base

Blend for 30 to 60 seconds, stopping to scrape the sides with the motor off. The mixture should be smooth and thick enough to mound on a spoon.

  3. Pulse the cereal

Add 1/4 cup of the cereal and pulse two or three times. Leave a little texture rather than blending until the bowl becomes completely liquid.

  4. Finish and eat

Spoon into a chilled shallow bowl and scatter the remaining cereal over it. Serve immediately before the smoothie melts and the topping absorbs liquid.

Kitchen tips

Use the smallest effective amount of liquid; add extra milk only a tablespoon at a time if the blades stall.

Cut banana into small pieces before freezing so the blender can move it without excessive liquid.

Substitutions

Replace milk and yogurt with unsweetened dairy-free alternatives, checking their labels and thickness.

For a gluten-free variation, choose a berry cereal labeled gluten-free and verify the remaining ingredients separately.

Storage

Serve immediately; refrigerate any remaining smoothie promptly and drink within 1 day without the topping.

Serving suggestions

Use a wide bowl and add a few fresh berry slices if available; the cereal is the main crunchy component.

Make ahead

Freeze banana slices on a tray in advance, then store sealed. Blend and top only when ready to eat because the bowl thins as it stands.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use fresh fruit?

Fresh fruit makes a thinner smoothie. Freeze the banana first or accept a drinkable texture and serve the cereal on the side.

Why is my blender not moving?

Stop the motor, scrape down the sides and add 1 tablespoon milk. Repeat only as needed so the smoothie stays thick.
